Hold the Back Page - Remembering Gary Speed - Man City / Liverpool / Luis Suarez / Rio Ferdinand / Euro 2012 Draw / Steve Bruce / Sunderland

Hold the BackPage returns for another edition with Willie Gannon back on board to join Neil Sherwin and Ger McCarthy in assessing the game’s recent talking points including the tragic passing of Gary Speed, the antics of Luis Suarez, Rio Ferdinand and Steve Bruce's sacking at Sunderland and, of course, no pod would be complete without a mention of the one and only Mario Balotelli...

It’s a rather sombre opening to this week’s podcast as the lads discuss the tragic passing of Gary Speed and share their memories of a fantastic player who has excelled for both club and country during a career which spanned more than two decades.

Attentions then turn to the midweek League Cup action where Manchester United were unceremoniously dumped out at the quarter final stage by Crystal Palace. Liverpool suffered a blow with Lucas Leiva sustaining a season ending ACL injury in their win over Chelsea, while Manchester City and Cardiff City make up the other semi final sides.

After jumping the gun in part one, Ger gets his chance to have a weekly rant about Mario Balotelli to kick off the second half of the podcast. There’s also some much deserved criticism for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez before Willie fires out all sorts of facts about Steve Bruce’s tenure as Sunderland boss which came to an end this week.

To round off the lads look at Giovanni Trapattoni’s contract meaning Neil can look forward to another scintillating qualifying campaign for Ireland.
