The Fast and the Furious: The Fastest Goals in Football
There have been many column inches dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo's wonder goal against Porto in the UEFA Champions League. A goal of such breathtaking beauty that it left even the most experienced of journalists scrambling for words to describe the strike.
At 65mph, the ball left Ronaldo's foot like an exocet missile and shook the back of the net while the 'keeper just looked on like a spectator. Everyone was in agreement that it was a special goal, especially Ronaldo.
But was it one of the fastest goals ever scored?
Nope. It ain't even close. According to the Guinness Book of Records that honour goes to the little known Ronny Heberson who shook the goal to its very foundations with an incredible 132mph for Sporting Lisbon against Naval in 2006. The Brazilian left fullback had not enjoyed the best of seasons for Sporting but this 88th minute goal has earned him a place in their record books.
The ball travels so fast that it becomes almost impossible to see during the flight of the ball towards the goal. To see the goal click here.
Not only does Ronaldo's goal not even come close to Ronny's magical effort, it does not even come close to making the top 10.
The top 10 SHOTS is as follows...
1. Ronny Heberson 132mph. Sporting Lisbon v Naval 2006.
2. David Hirst 114mph. Sheffield Wednesday v Arsenal 1996.
3. Steven Reid 98mph. Blackburn Rovers v Wigan 2005.
4. David Beckham 98mph. Manchester United v Chelsea 1997.
5. David Trezeguet 96mph. Monaco v Manchester United 1998.
6. Richie Humphries 96mph. Sheffield Wednesday v Aston Villa 1996.
7. Tony Yeboah 95 mph. Leeds United v Liverpool 1995.
8. Matt Le Tissier 87mph. Southampton v Newcastle 1997.
9. Alan Shearer 86mph. Newcastle v Leicester 1996.
10. Roberto Carlos 85mph. Brazil v France 1997.
Of all the shots above, it should be noted that David Hirst's effort cannoned back off the cross-bar with David Seaman stranded.
Anyway when all is said and done, and great goal that it was, Ronnie's goal just doesn't compare to Ronny's goal.
So what's the best goal you've ever seen...
